A garlic grater. Rub a peeled clove across the rough band in the middle and it breaks down into a paste, then pour the oil straight into the dish and take it to the table. Deep amber glass with the sides folded up, and a run of orange across the centre where the surface turns coarse — the stony shallow strip a river leaves behind when it drops what it was carrying. The texture is fired into the glass rather than cut, so there is nothing to wear smooth. Wash it by hand.
